With a lot of similar products that are out on the market today, does the roof color matter a lot? Definitely. Roof colors matter a lot, and this is not just for cosmetic reasons. The materials they are constructed from makes a huge difference in its performance capabilities, and the color is closely related to the material when we’re talking about single-ply membrane systems.
So the question now is, what are the differences between the most popular types of single-ply materials for replacement and installation?
So let’s discuss about EPDM, which is typically black, and the other thermoplastic materials, TPO and PVC, which are colored white. So which one should you choose for you roof?
What is EPDM
EPDM’s abbreviation stands for Ethylene Propylene Diene Terpolymer, which has been produced by manufacturers to be durable and a roofing material that is built to last. EPDM has been commonly used over the past couple of years in low-sloped buildings across the country.
EPDM is usually made available in either black and white. The black EDPM material helps absorb heat, which is a ideal during the cold months and seasons. The absorbed heat can thaw water so it can flow downwards faster and alleviate any damage that are caused by ice dams. This variant of EPDM can help insulate heat. The white variant however, is used on selected buildings because it can reflect off UV rays that might cause intense heat build-up inside your home.
What is PVC
One the talk of PVC material, one of the usual things that come into mind first are hard pipes and gutters. Although is a fact, PVC material that is being used on rooftops is more flexible than their related pipe cousins. Similar to EPDM, PVC membranes can be mechanically attached or even fully-adhered. They can be customized to your liking—which is very important, especially to those who wanted to personalize their roofing system to whatever they like.
Although they do not have exceptional heat-resistance and punctures to all kinds of leaks, it’s not going to adhere to other asphalt-based roofing materials. If you are planning on installing PVC along with asphalt-based materials, we would like to suggest that they do not come in physical contact with each other. In most cases, contractors will have to place separator sheets in between them.
What is TPO
This kind of material was designed to be an all-round step up from PVC. The TPO key component is that it has a coated nature. The material that is being used on the top layer is different from the material that’s used below it. The wearing surface is at the top layer while the filler is situated at the bottom of the material.
This material is a popular and go-to material for many because it is very affordable to purchase. If you’re prioritizing on affordability, then TPO is high recommended. The downside here is that compared to PVC as a sort of upgraded version, it does not live up much to its expectation. To be sure, it’s essential to do your own research first on the best manufacturers for this material and the warranties that come with it.
TPO is usually manufactured by having small rolls instead of one large sheet. That means this will require more seams than usual. EPDM, on the other hand, requires fewer seams because it is commonly sold as a bulk.
